Quick answer

In Zoom’s desktop settings, open Audio, choose Noise removal under Microphone modes and start with Auto background noise suppression. If you use KleenMic, select KleenMic Microphone as Zoom’s input.

Find Zoom’s noise controls

The current Zoom desktop instructions put these controls under Settings → Audio. Select Noise removal in Microphone modes, then use Background noise suppression. Start with Auto; change the level only if the call still needs it.

Zoom also offers Original sound for musicians. That is a different goal: preserving a wider range of sound. It is not the usual starting point for an ordinary spoken meeting. Menu labels can change with the app version, so use Zoom’s support page if your settings look different.

Confirm the input before changing quality

A Mac can offer its built-in microphone, a headset, a display microphone and several virtual inputs at once. Speak near the microphone you intend to use and watch Zoom’s input level. If the meter barely reacts, confirm that you selected the correct device and that it is connected.

When using KleenMic, pick your physical microphone inside KleenMic and KleenMic Microphone in Zoom. The real microphone should not be selected in both places if you expect Zoom to receive KleenMic’s processed signal.

Check noise and speech separately

Join a private test meeting with another device using headphones, or ask someone to help with a short check. First read a complete sentence in a quiet room. Then repeat while typing. Finally, use the background sound that normally causes trouble.

Keep your distance from the microphone steady. Listen for the first consonant of each sentence, quiet words and the ends of words. A setting that makes pauses silent but removes parts of your speech is too aggressive for that setup.

If your voice sounds thin or robotic

Start by simplifying the processing. Compare Zoom’s normal setting with one dedicated filter, changing only one control between tests. If Zoom is receiving an already filtered input, try a gentler Zoom setting and listen again.

Also compare a wired or built-in microphone if you have one available. A different physical input can reveal whether the problem starts in the microphone connection or appears after filtering. Do not change your microphone, room and filter together or the result becomes difficult to interpret.

If typing still comes through

Move the microphone away from the keyboard and closer to your mouth where practical. Desk vibration and airborne clicks need different fixes: a stable stand or desk mat can help the first, while placement can improve the balance between your voice and the second.

Our keyboard noise guide walks through a controlled check. Louder speech should not be the only way to make a call usable; aim for a comfortable position and a setting that keeps ordinary speech intact.

Before the real meeting

  • Leave Test Mode off once you finish listening.
  • Reconnect your usual headset and recheck Zoom’s microphone selection.
  • Confirm mute is off when you want to speak.
  • Keep your previous working microphone available as a fallback.

If Zoom cannot hear any input, follow the microphone troubleshooting guide before adding more suppression.

Common questions

Should I always choose the highest Zoom noise suppression?

Start with Auto and listen. A stronger setting is useful only if it reduces the unwanted sound while preserving the words you need people to hear.

Why does Zoom sound unchanged after installing KleenMic?

Check Zoom’s selected microphone. It needs to use KleenMic Microphone rather than your physical microphone directly.
