Quick answer
Try Voice Isolation in an app that supports it. If it works well, keep it. If you need a separate filtered input, use a virtual microphone and select that input in each calling app.
How to find Voice Isolation
Open an app that supports Mic Modes, such as FaceTime, and make the microphone active for a call. Open the menu-bar video or audio controls, find Mic Mode and choose Voice Isolation. The exact menu presentation depends on the app and macOS version.
Apple’s guide explains that the available options vary by app. If the control is absent, do not assume a broken microphone: check the app’s own audio controls or consider a separate microphone filter.
The difference is the signal path
A built-in mode belongs to the supported app’s audio path. A virtual microphone is a separate input device exposed to calling apps. With KleenMic, your physical microphone feeds the filter, and the meeting app receives KleenMic Microphone.
Installing a virtual microphone does not automatically make every application use it. Select it in each app and check the choice after device changes.
Choose around the way you call

| Your situation | A useful starting point |
|---|---|
| One supported calling app | Try the built-in mic mode |
| Several apps with different controls | Consider a shared virtual microphone |
| A file already recorded | Look for recorded-audio cleanup |
| Noise in your headphones | Check playback and headphone options separately |
The last two cases are different from cleaning your outgoing microphone. Define what needs to change before comparing products.
Listen before you add another layer
Start with the built-in mode alone and a normal speaking voice. Have a listener check a short sentence in quiet and with the usual noise. Then compare a dedicated filter with the same microphone and position.
Do not combine several strong filters for the first comparison. If you later want to layer controls, add them one at a time and listen for speech damage. Keep notes about the settings so you can return to the better result.
What KleenMic adds
KleenMic provides a virtual microphone, microphone noise removal, echo control and Auto, Quality and Efficient modes. Its live Test Mode plays the processed input through headphones without saving a recording.
It requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. The three-day trial is followed by a $20 one-time purchase if you choose to keep it. Trial launches need internet; paid processing can work offline for up to 30 days after verification. See the setup guide and purchase terms.
Keep expectations realistic
No microphone filter makes your spoken voice inaudible to people in the room. It changes the signal sent to a call. A filter also cannot fix an unplugged microphone or a meeting that selected the wrong input.
If a control seems to do nothing, first confirm the route. If the route is right but the result is disappointing, compare microphone position and the actual background sound. Your best setup may be the simplest one that keeps every word understandable.
Common questions
Does Voice Isolation work in every Mac app?
Apple says Mic Mode options vary by app. Check the available menu-bar controls while using the supported calling app.
Do I need KleenMic if Voice Isolation already works?
A separate app is optional. Consider it only if its controls, cross-app routing or result improve something you need.
