Quick answer
Check that the physical microphone works, then check the filtering app, then the meeting’s selected input. Confirm mute and microphone permissions before changing noise-removal settings.
Start with the physical microphone
Check that the microphone or headset is connected and selected in macOS Sound → Input. Speak normally and observe the input level. If the device has a physical mute control, check that too.
If the physical device is absent or produces no signal, investigate its cable, connection or power first. Try another available microphone to narrow the problem. The Apple sound input guide describes where to inspect the selected source.
Check permission for the app that needs the audio
In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, check the app that needs microphone access. With a browser meeting, the browser may also require a site-level permission. Follow any instruction to reopen the app after changing permission.
Apple’s microphone privacy guide explains the macOS control. Give access to the app you intend to use; granting unrelated permissions is not part of microphone troubleshooting.
Then inspect the filter
In KleenMic, reselect the physical microphone you just checked. Confirm that the app has trial or paid access for processing. If you are using the trial after reopening offline, reconnect first. A paid license also needs to reconnect after its 30-day offline period.
Use live Test Mode with headphones to hear whether processed microphone audio is present, then turn Test Mode off. It does not save a recording. If the physical mic works but this step does not, focus on the filter, its input, permissions and license state.
Finally inspect the meeting input
Select KleenMic Microphone in the calling app if you want the filtered route. A system default is less useful for diagnosis than choosing the device explicitly. Confirm that the meeting is unmuted.
If the physical microphone works directly in the meeting but the virtual microphone does not, that narrows the problem to the filtering route or its selection. Use the direct input as a temporary fallback when joining a call matters more than finishing the diagnosis.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
Swipe sideways to see every column.
| Symptom | Next check |
|---|---|
| No input anywhere | Physical device, mute and permission |
| Test Mode works, meeting is silent | Meeting input, mute and browser permission |
| Voice passes through but noise returns | Filter enabled, correct input and processing access |
| Only one meeting app fails | That app’s device selection and settings |
After any change, repeat one short sentence. Stop changing settings once the signal returns and check the noise separately.
What to send if you need help
Note your macOS version, KleenMic version, physical microphone, calling app and the last change before the failure. State which of the three stages worked: physical input, Test Mode and meeting input. This is more useful than “the microphone is broken.”
Contact KleenMic support with that summary. Do not send a purchase key in a public forum. If an installer or managed Mac requires administrator help, involve the person responsible for that Mac instead of repeatedly changing system audio settings.
Common questions
Why do I hear raw sound after the trial ends?
When processing access expires, KleenMic disables processing while microphone passthrough remains available. Check the license panel and current purchase terms.
Should I restart the Mac immediately?
First note the selected devices and check the signal path. A restart can be a practical later step, but those observations help identify whether the same problem returns.
