Quick answer

In Discord User Settings → Voice & Video, select your microphone and use Mic Test. Try Discord’s built-in suppression, or select your physical mic in KleenMic and its virtual microphone in Discord; then tune voice activity separately.

Test Discord’s built-in suppression

Open User Settings → Voice & Video and select your physical microphone under Input Device. Choose your usual headphones or speakers as output. Under Mic Test, select Let’s Check and speak at normal and quiet volumes. Join a voice channel and ask a friend to listen too; a local test does not replace hearing the result in a live conversation.

Discord offers Krisp noise suppression in its voice settings and a control in voice channels. Discord describes its integrated Krisp feature as free within Discord and intended for non-human background noises. It affects your outgoing microphone audio; it does not remove another participant’s noise for you. Test with your normal keyboard or fan and compare it off and on. In a quiet room you may prefer the unfiltered sound.

Check the input device after connecting a headset or changing Windows defaults. If Discord is set to a default device, the actual source can change. Selecting the named microphone explicitly makes the route easier to diagnose. Verify you are not muted and have permission to speak in the channel.

Send KleenMic into Discord

For a separate filter usable in other calling apps too, download KleenMic and follow the Windows installation guide. It explains the ZIP and self-signed installer. KleenMic supports 64-bit Windows 10/11; Windows 11 on Arm runs the x64 app using emulation.

  1. Select the real headset, USB or built-in microphone in KleenMic and turn noise cancellation on. Listen with headphones in Test Mode, then turn Test Mode off.
  2. In Discord Voice & Video, choose KleenMic or the exact virtual input name Windows reports. Windows may add an adapter suffix. Keep your preferred headphones or speakers as output.
  3. Turn Discord noise suppression off for an initial test, use Let’s Check and ask a friend to listen in a channel. Compare with Discord’s built-in suppression alone by selecting the physical microphone directly in Discord.
  4. Keep KleenMic running while using its virtual input. Closing its window hides it to the notification-area tray; reopen it from the tray.

Two noise filters in series can make a soft voice or unusual sound harder to evaluate. Compare one filter at a time first; if you combine them, listen for clipped words and keep the setting that works for your own environment.

Tune voice activity separately

Noise suppression reduces unwanted sound in the signal. Discord Voice Activity decides when to transmit: a threshold set above your quiet voice can cut off words even when the microphone itself works. In Voice & Video, choose Voice Activity and check input sensitivity. If automatic sensitivity misses quiet words or sentence endings, Discord suggests trying manual sensitivity.

Speak at your softest normal volume while watching the input indicator. Adjust the threshold so that quiet speech activates it while the room does not constantly trigger it. A noisy room may leave little separation; move the microphone closer and repeat the test. Push to Talk is another input mode: it transmits while you hold its assigned key, so check the key and release timing if beginnings or endings disappear.

When sound is not ordinary speech

Music, singing, sound effects and deliberately unusual voices may be treated as noise by voice-focused processing. For a comparison, disable Discord suppression and KleenMic cancellation, or select the physical microphone in Discord. Voice Activity can still gate quiet sounds, so test its threshold or use Push to Talk. Tell listeners before testing loud sounds and restore your normal settings afterward.

If Discord’s input is silent, check the physical mic and KleenMic meter first, then Windows microphone access and Discord’s Input Device. If the virtual device is missing, check the driver recovery action in KleenMic Setup and reopen Discord. If the local test works but the channel does not, check mute, channel permissions and the input mode. KleenMic offers a 72-hour trial and a $20 one-time license for one active computer, Mac or Windows.

Common questions

Does Discord Krisp filter other people’s microphones?

No. Discord says its integrated suppression filters noise from your side, not other participants’ microphones.

Why are the ends of my sentences missing?

Test Discord input sensitivity as well as suppression. Try manual sensitivity and set the threshold low enough for your quiet speech.
